Derbyshire walkers to aid charity

Scores of dedicated Derbyshire fundraisers are lacing up their walking boots to raise vital funds for charity.

Kind-hearted walkers are set to take on the Three Dams Challenge to aid the Children’s Hospital Charity in Sheffield.

The event, which takes place on Sunday, October 5, will see fundraisers complete a five, ten or 15-mile trek through the Peak District

Fundraising duo Cath Turkington and Lynne Knowles, of Wingerworth, have committed to walking the 15-mile route to thank the hospital which saved the lives of two youngsters in their village.

One of those children, Ben Murray, was just five when he was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia and admitted to Sheffield Children’s Hospital. The youngster underwent gruelling chemotherapy and regular painful lumbar punctures. Mum Joanne said: “He was so brave. The treatment was awful for him but he just got on with it. The hospital was fantastic.”

Another Wingerworth teen, George Marriot, has also been treated by the hospital since 2008 for a rare brain tumour called a craniopharyngioma.
