Derbyshire jobless down, despite national rise

The number of people claiming Jobseekers’ Allowance in Derbyshire continues to fall – despite the national unemployment total rising for the first time in two years.

According to the Department for Work and Pensions, the claimant count for the county was 6,164 in June – 36 per cent down on the figure of 8,872 this time last year.

However, the Office of National Statistics said there were 1.85 million unemployed nationally in the March-to-May period – up 15,000 from the previous three months.

Across the whole of the East MidlandsDerbyshire, Nottinghamshire and Leicestershire – the Jobseekers’ Allowance count fell again in June by 1,329, meaning there were 13,395 fewer claimants than in June 2014.

Chris Hobson, director of policy at e East Midlands chamber of commerce, said: “The latest employment figures are once again positive and provide further evidence of just how strong the economy is here in the East Midlands.

“Over the past 12 months, this region has created jobs at a faster rate than anywhere else in the UK.

“It strengthens our message to Government that the East Midlands holds the key to the UK’s long-term economic success.”
