CUTE ALERT: Meet the real life Lady and the Tramp

A dog rehoming centre in Chesterfield has recently acquired eight new residents as a result of a story that is straight out of the movies.

Lady and Tramp - as the staff at Derbyshire Dog Rehoming on Broomhill Road in Old Whittington have named them - were found in the middle of the night desperately wandering the streets and ravenously hungry.

The pair - both unusual blue Staffordshire bull terriers - were obviously an expectant mum and dad.

Manager Jenny Mark said: “It was a rush to prepare a maternity room. I was worried that Lady might not settle at such short notice, but she seemed to be relieved to be safe.

“Lady managed to hang on for another couple of days and then produced six beautiful puppies. Two of them are blue and white and four are all blue like mum and dad.”

Jenny believes that Lady has had pups before and said: “She is a devoted mother and seems to know just what to do.

“Even though she is in a strange place with people she doesn’t know, she hasn’t made any fuss, she’s a real star.”

The home will be looking for new owners for Lady and the puppies when they are nine weeks old.

In the meantime, they say puppy food and donations to help rear and vaccinate them will be gratefully appreciated.

They are, however, hoping to find a new home for Tramp as soon as possible.

“He needs to get back to a normal life. Tramp is a real character, good natured, sociable and likes to be the centre of attention,” she said.

As for the puppies, they have had a couple of phone calls already and a few people have enquired about them on their Facebook page.

But as to how Lady and Tramp ended up in the situation they were in when they were found, Jenny admits it’s ‘a bit of a mystery’.

Maybe someone should make a movie about it.

Donations can be made to the home by using the PayPal button on their Facebook page.
