Alcoholic relapsed and stole wine

An alcoholic stole two bottles of wine from a Glossop store after relapsing, a court heard.

Patrick O’Hagan was stopped after a member of the public saw him take a bottle of wine from Marks and Spencers on April 8, High Peak Magistrates’ Court heard.

Staff recognised him as the person captured on CCTV two days earlier taking a bottle of wine from the store, prosecutor Jennifer Fitzgerald said.

O’Hagan was interviewed and admitted taking the wine on April 8 but denied the earlier offence.

The 45-year-old, of High Street East, Glossop, admitted two counts of theft when he appeared in court on Monday.

Karina Lyon, defending, said: “He is a long-standing alcoholic. He had been alcohol-free for four months but recognises that he has had a relapse.”

Magistrates adjourned the case until May 19.
