A big freeze has tightened its grip on Derbyshire.

Last night, an Arctic air mass enveloped the country – bringing the first snow of the season to parts of the Peak District.

Residents in Buxton woke up today to a town masked in white.

Cars were reportedly stranded on the Snake Pass last night and this morning the same route and the Woodhead Pass were “hazardous” due to snow.

Some further wintry showers are expected to fall throughout Saturday.

And Derbyshire will be colder than the Russian capital Moscow today with temperatures struggling to reach 5C.

However, bitterly cold, strong winds will make it feel below freezing.

Overnight and into Sunday, temperatures are expected to plunge to -2C with some scattered wintry showers.

A Met Office spokesman said: “Ice will be a hazard.

“Please be aware of the likelihood of some difficult driving conditions and possible travel disruption.

“The public is advised to take extra care.”

A Derbyshire County Council spokesman said: “We gritted high routes on Friday night and will be monitoring forecasts over the weekend.”

The big freeze comes after weeks of above-average temperatures – the start of November was the second mildest on record.

It is expected to turn less cold at the start of next week.
