Buxton spring fair this Saturday in aid of Chernobyl children

The aftermath of radiation from the Chernobyl Power Plant explosion means thousands of children in the region are born with or develop thyroid cancer, bone cancer and leukaemia. Type 1 diabetes, heart disease, respiratory problems, digestive system problems and birth defects are also very common.

The Chernobyl Children’s Project brings some of these children to the UK for recuperative holidays.

And the group is holding a fundraising spring fair this Saturday (March 19) at Hartington Gardens, on Hartington Road, Buxton, from 10.30am.

Barbara Cox, from the charity’s Buxton, Longnor and District Group which specialises in hosting children with Type 1 diabetes, said: “There are nearly 800 children with Type 1 diabetes living in the Chernobyl area.

“Their diabetic necessities are in short supply and expensive and unlike the UK they do not have a National Health Service. Many children die from this illness and many more live only into their 20s.

“Their self-help diabetic association strives to help the children and especially those in poorer families, very often living in primitive conditions, great distances from medical help.

“We would like to help their association to supply them with their diabetic essentials. Please help us to help them.”
