Buxton shoplifter was “hungry”

A Buxton woman stole chocolate because she was hungry but didn’t have any money on her, a court heard.

Stacey Barnes was admitted the theft of a Cadbury Dairy Milk and a box of Fererro Rocher, worth £6.50, from Sainsburys, on the Market Place, in Buxton, on May 5.

The 23-year-old, of South Avenue, was sentenced to a conditional discharge at High Peak Magistrates’ Court on Monday.

The court heard Barnes was caught shoplifting at about 3pm on the supermarket’s CCTV.

Prosecutor Jennifer Fitzgerald said that at interview, the defendant told police she stole the items with the intention of consuming them, because she was hungry.

Kirsten Collings, defending, said: “She would no doubt be cautioned for the theft, if she wasn’t currently on bail for burglary, which she denies, from Derby Crown Court.”

Chairman of the Bench Hilary Batterbee described the offence as “silly”.

Barnes was also ordered to pay £85 court costs, £6.50 compensation and a £15 victim surcharge.
