Buxton has been named one of the best places to live in the UK.

The Sunday Times has put the High Peak spa town in the top ten midlands towns in its best places to live in Britain list, to be published on Sunday.

The list, consisting of 101 places nationwide, was compiled using data and statistics such as crime rates, house prices and school performance with the local knowledge and expertise of the newspaper’s writers.

The places were selected for offering the best quality of life to the widest number of people, and combining desirable features such as a positive community spirit, good local shops and services and attractive outdoor spaces.

Buxton joined Barford, in Warwickshire; Byfield, in Northamptonshire; Leamington Spa, in Warwickshire; Ledbury, in Herefordshire; Malvern, in Worcestershire; Oakham, in Rutland; Shrewsbury, in Shropshire; Stamford, in Lincolnshire; and Yardley Hastings, in Northamptonshire in the midlands category.

Commenting on the list, home editor Helen Davies said: “The best places guide is dedicated to celebrating Britain’s abundance of great cities, towns and villages.

“We combine in-depth data with first-hand personal experience to produce an authoritative list. There are lots of places across Britain that are worth celebrating, and everyone has different priorities, so this year our supplements cover everything from the countryside to inner-cities.”

The accolade comes after Buxton was named runner up in the great town awards last year.
