Buxton landmark red-dy for Valentine's Day

The Friends of Buxton Station (FoBS) hopes to help residents and visitors get in a passionate mood this St Valentine's Day by lighting-up the historic fanlight window at Buxton Station in gloriously rich and romantic red.

The ‘loving switch-on’ was the idea of FoBS members working in collaboration with fanlight owners, D. B. Schenker.

The Grade II-listed structure is protected and it requires special permission to operate the lights. Consent was given by High Peak Borough Council in August 2015.

Chairman of FoBS, David Carlisle, said: “We wanted to show our love for this brilliant window and encourage others to spread the love at this special time of year.”

The fanlight window is all that remains of the huge glass-covered station built by John Smith under the guidance of the famous architect, Joseph Paxton in 1863.

The lighting scheme will bring the window to life at night and stop it falling into obscurity. A similar station, the Midland used to stand next door, but was sadly demolished in 1969.

David added: “We know lots of people love the lighting effects that were introduced at Christmas and we wanted to arrange something special for St Valentine’s Day.”

The window is illuminated on special occasions, whether they are local, national or international.

FoBS is an unfunded voluntary community group which aims to make the station and surroundings more welcoming, comfortable and attractive for everyone.
