Boxing sessions for children in rural areas

Members of Hartington Young People’s Activity Club (HYPAC) have been taking part in Ozbox activities at the village hall.

The Ozbox scheme was introduced 15 years ago by the police, to support young people who were or could be involved in crime or anti-social behaviour.

Former Chesterfield Detective Inspector Steve Osbaldeston MBE founded the programme, and is still involved in running the sessions in the community.

Steve said: “When the police experienced cuts in funding they had to finish the scheme a few years ago, but we decided to continue with the sessions for children from all backgrounds. .

“Children from rural villages including Hartington, Biggin, Sheen, Warslow and Alstonfield have been taking part in the activities.

“We have worked alongside the HYPAC group before and were keen to provide the Ozbox opportunity to newer, younger members. The children have been taking part in warm ups, fitness development and non-contact boxing.”

Ruby Debes, 10, said: “We had to work hard, but they made it fun with the music and lots of encouragement.”

Participants have been awarded prizes of T-shirts, bags and wrist bands.
