Air ambulance called to rescue injured Peaks climber

DRAMATIC IMAGES: Air ambulance and mountain rescuers came to the aid of a climber over the weekend, caught in some dramatic images by a photographer who happened to be climbing nearby.

Yorkshire Air Ambulance was called to Stanage Edge in the Peak District on Friday, May 27

Edale Mountain Rescue said: "We were called along with East Midlands Ambulance Service to Stanage Edge near Hathersage.

"Whilst climbing with a group from Sheffield University, the female took a fall of approx 5 metres, landing heavily at the base of the edge. She was treated for head injuries and possible pelvic injuries as well as being immobilised in a vacuum mattress.

She was then carried a short distance to where the Yorkshire Air Ambulance had managed to land for transfer to the Major Trauma Centre in Sheffield."

Our photos were taking by photographer Ian Longthorne who was ascending Stanage Edge as the incident took place.

He said: "I witnessed a great job by the Yorkshire Air Ambulance

"The photos show the Air Ambulance arriving on the scene and the team bringing the injured climber back down to be air lifted away."
