Wartime play stars Graham Seed from The Archers

Terence Rattigan’s Flare Path tells the story of the wife of an RAF pilot whose marriage is tested to the limits by the surprise arrival of her ex-lover.

The production, which will run at Buxton Opera House from February 10 to 13, stars Graham Seed (best known as Nigel Pargeter from The Archers).

He said: “There is something special about this play. It is such good story-telling and all the parts are so well written, it’s a joy as an actor.”

Graham plays Squadron Leader Swanson in the prduction. He said: “It’s a rather beautiful story about loyalty, decision and love - all the character’s emotions are heightened because of the predicament they are in, which is the Second World War and role of bomber command. It’s a play about love and loss.”

Flare Path is produced by the same company behind the acclaimed show Birdsong and is directed by Jutin Audibert who has worked with the Royal Shakespeare Company.

Justin said of Flare Path: “You can really feel the play’s authenticity; you can tell Rattigan lived in that world. He joined the RAF, he trained as a wireless operator, as a rear gunner. He’d force landed on the seas – he’d done all those things.

“It’s true of the time, that stiff upper lip comes across in abundance, it’s very touching and funny and it’s a journey where one minute you are laughing and the next you’re crying.

“There’s some funny gags, there is some funny set pieces, but there’s also real emotion of high drama and a sense of loss.”

Performances of Flare Path are at 7.30pm with matinees on Thursday, February 11 and Saturday, February 13, at 2.30pm.
