Society celebrates pirate's birthday
Matlock Gilbert and Sullivan Society are producing The Pirates of Penzance this year, when it will be one of the leading character's 160th birthday.
Frederick, a pirate, was born on February 29,1856, which makes him (officially) 160 but - owing to many leap years - he is only really 40, which complicates his life in a way that only W.S. Gilbert could create.
The Pirates of Penzance will be performed at the Medway Centre, Bakewell on June 9, 10 and 11.
The society performs a varied repertoire of other musical styles and works contemporary to G&S in concert performances throughout the year all over north Derbyshire, including Chatsworth.
