Happily people can enjoy the benefits of city and countryside by looking for a home in one of the National Park’s towns or villages, which are surrounded by beautiful rural scenery yet within commutable distance of central Sheffield.
Hathersage, Baslow, Bakewell, Grindleford and Hope are some of the familiar spots – but there are numerous lesser-known locations worth considering.

5. Calver
And here's Calver, which boasts some attractive old cottages off the main through road. One of its best facilities is the upmarket White's Spar, which is a cut above most convenience stores. The A625 nearby goes straight into Sheffield.

6. Bradwell
Bradwell - known locally as 'Bradda' - is one of the Peak District's bigger villages. Home to luxury ice cream maker Bradwell's, it has an active parish council, pubs and a chip shop. Commuters can drive into Sheffield via Hathersage, or get the train from Hope.

7. Froggatt
"Quaint little cottages with pretty gardens nestle below the rugged crags of Froggatt Edge, forming a peaceful scene that has changed little over the centuries," is how Visit Peak District describes Froggatt, situated on the A625 into Sheffield.

8. Bamford
Bamford - not far from the A57 into Sheffield - offers shops, a petrol station and pubs including The Anglers Rest, a community-owned pub, post office and cafe.
