A town saved – remembering the Toddbrook Reservoir crisis in Whaley Bridge one year on

The people of Whaley Bridge were evacuated, emergency help came from all over the country and the community came together in the face of the Toddbrook Reservoir dam collapse.

The events of last year will stay etched in residents minds for generations but take a look back at the truly amazing feat of the military and emergency services who worked tirelessly to save Whaley Bridge with these snaps taken at the height of the crisis.

On August 1, 2019 engineers watching drone footage of the spillway failure made the call to evacuate parts of Whaley Bridge.

Over the next few hours police told the town's residents to gather at a school, taking pets and medication with them.

A severe flood warning, which means a threat to life, was issued for the River Goyt below the reservoir.

Emergency services were drafted in from all over the country and the army and the RAF were also called in to help pump water from the 300-million-gallon Toddbrook Reservoir amid fears it could burst and swamp Whaley Bridge.

The quick actions of the wonderful workers and volunteers meant the dam was saved and people could safely return to their homes just days later.
