In 1770 work started to build a turnpike road along the route of the current B5470 to make the journey much more comfortable for horse drawn traffic. The Coach and Horses no longer had sufficient passing trade and was closed after the opening of the new turnpike road. The Innkeeper in 1791 was Henry Johnson.
