One of Britain’s household names is recruiting the next generation of talent, to work from its division at Tunstead.

Tarmac creates sustainable building materials and works with the construction industry. Now Tarmac, a CRH company, has a range of apprenticeship roles available. These include electrical maintenance and mechanical maintenance apprentices.

Each of the roles offers training over the next four years, and successful applicants will ‘earn while they learn’.

What does training look like?

Working with and learning from a highly experienced team, apprentices will split their time between on site experience and training opportunities off site. Tarmac is looking for candidates with good problem solving skills, who love working outdoors and love tinkering with and solving practical tech issues, whether that’s fixing a broken bike, building Lego or stripping down a washing machine!

What’s included?

Apprentices will earn a competitive salary, and a very decent package of other benefits, including 26 days of core holidays plus bank holidays and a pension scheme. As well as the excellent training, and apprenticeship, seen as a very good alternative to university of college, could offer a lif long career in engineering or maintenance.

About you and your training

You will need at least five GCSEs at grade 4 or above, including maths, English and a science. Once appointed you will work towards an NVQ level 3 Diploma (ONC).

Over 48 months you will do on site training and day release, with at least 30 weeks of the training full-time at a local engineering centre (transport from site to training is provided).

The roles operate Monday to Friday, with apprentices working a 40 hour week.

If you love gadgets, then this is the role for you

People who want to work behind a desk all day long, or who don’t like the weather, needn’t apply. But if you love stripping down bikes and rebuilding them, working with Lego or Mecanno and tinkering with gadgets, you are already part-way towards having the dream skillset to train with Tarmac.

You will need good communication skills, want to play a vital role in a team team whatever the weather, and have a drive work your hardest and succeed at everything you do. Being enthusiastic and keen to learn is a major advantage.

Darren Page, early careers manager at Tarmac said: “A career at Tarmac isn’t just a job, it’s a chance to shape the world we live in. Our apprenticeship programmes provide relevant hands-on experience, first class learning and development, and outstanding support.”

Candidates need to be able to get to the Tunstead plant outside of Buxton (public transport is limited). However, transport is provided from the site to the local college.

The closing date for applications is May 31, 2023.
