New operators of Peak marina pledge ‘substantial’ investment

The new operators of New Mills Marina have pledged a “substantial” cash investment as part of a major refurbishment which, they claim, will see the site boast facilities to rival the best on the canal network.

Pridewater Estates Ltd, which owns and operates a number of canal marinas around the country, has agreed a long-term lease with Canal & River Trust, which own the Hibbert Street site on the Peak Forest Canal.

Robert Hutton, co-owner of Pridewater, said the company’s marinas were renowned for the quality of their construction, facilities, landscaping and general maintenance, and that the aim was to restore the New Mills site to that level.

He said: “We are very proud to have been selected to upgrade, lease and operate New Mills Marina as we were in competition with a number of leading companies in our industry.

“The attractions of this well-established site in the pleasant market town of New Mills are obvious. It is small enough to generate a friendly and welcoming atmosphere, is located close to an area of outstanding natural beauty in a town that is proud of having a marina within its boundaries, and is perfectly positioned to become the finest place to moor a canal boat in the High Peak district and beyond.”

Over the coming months, Pridewater intend to replace all landing stages at the Hibbert Street marina, build new showers, toilets, offices and stores, improve internal paths, roads and parking facilities, install a free wi-fi connection for moorers and improve site security.

Mr Hutton added: “While this work will in the short term regrettably result in some inconvenience to existing moorers, the benefits for all will be significant when it is complete.”

Pridewater own marinas at Fazeley on the Birmingham and Fazeley Canal close to Tamworth, at Huddlesford on The Coventry Canal close to Lichfield and at Grove on the Grand Union Canal close to Leighton Buzzard.

The announcement comes just weeks after the owner of neighbouring Furness Vale Marina, Richard Purcell, was granted permission to treble the size of his site.
