Wow factor to Joanna MacGregor's piano recital

Joanna MacGregor's piano recital was exciting and varied, writes Mavis Kirkham

She started and ended with pieces by Beethoven which she played beautifully. She also played mazurkas by Chopin (Opus 30) which were lovely.

The middle of the concert at Buxton’s Pavilion Arts Centre consisted of three very different pieces by modern composers. Three lively Argentinian dances, by Alberto Ginastera, included the wild Dance of theArrogant Cowboy.

The chaconne by the Tartar-Russian composer SophiaGubaidulina, looked back over the composer’s life with many dramas and references to great composers.

Black Earth by the Turkish composer, Fazil Say,was inspired by a Turkish folk song. At the beginning and end of the piece the strings are plucked within the piano to produce the mournful sound of the Turkish lute, the middle of the piece was an explosion of piano music in several

different styles.

Joanna MacGregor’s piano playing is technically brilliant, exciting and very expressive. The audience thoroughly enjoyed it.
