Sam Clemens stars in Sherlock thriller at Buxton Opera House

The stage at Buxton Opera House will be turned into the smoke ridden slums of Victorian London for a ‘pure heart-pounding’ stage production of Sherlock Holmes.

Described as a ‘terrifying fusion of fact and fiction’ Sherlock Holmes & the Ripper Murders will be staged in Buxton in August.

The critically acclaimed stage play was written by the late Brian Clemens who is best known for his work on The Professionals and The Avengers.

The show stars the writer’s son Samuel Clemens as Sherlock Holmes alongside popular local star George Telfer as Dr Watson.

The curtains rise to a foggy scene in East London dimly lit with gas light. There’s the sound of footsteps echoing in the distance… The city is gripped in fear by the grisly killings in Whitechapel, dubbed by the popular press as the work of ‘Jack the Ripper’. Sherlock Holmes and Dr John H Watson are called in to investigate but are soon drawn into a conspiracy that reaches to the highest level of the establishment. But for Holmes, there is a uniquely personal element to this new and terrifying case.

The Talking Scarlet production has opened to fantastic reviews, described as ‘absolutely first-rate theatre’ by Eastbourne Herald.

Talking Scarlet is an independent theatre company which was formed in 2001. The company’s productions this year have included The Ghost Train, Stone Cold Murder, The End of the Affair and What The Butler Saw.
