Review: Spamalot at Theatre Royal, Nottingham

I was never a fan of Monty Python growing up, but maybe my sense of humour has changed over the years as I can’t ever remember laughing so much during a stage show.

This was a side-splitter which provided so many laugh out loud moments as soon as the curtain was raised to the clip-clopping sound of banging coconut shells and face-slapping fishes.

‘Lovingly’ ripped off from The Holy Grail, Spamalot tells the tale of King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table, but this time with beautiful show girls, a flying cow and even killer rabbit thrown in.

Joe Pasquale was brilliant as King Arthur as he and sidekick Patsy (Joe Tracini) round-up the knights for a trip to Camelot, but along the way they are interrupted by God (Eric Idle on a big screen) and sent to find the Holy Grail.

Lady of the Lake Sarah Earnshaw has a fantastic singing voice, while she also added humour thanks to a fabulous diva-style strop midway through the second act.

Songs include He’s Not Dead Yet and Find Your Grail and there’s no better way to end a show than with a sing-a-long to Always Look on the Bright Side of Life.

Another highlight was the hilarious battle between King Arthur and the Black Knight, who had the audience in stitches with his eagerness to continue fighting – despite losing all his limbs!

It was a wonderfully wacky show and is proof that Monty Python remains as popular as ever.
