New stage adaptation of gothic classic novel

Chapterhouse Theatre Company will present Emily Brontë’s unyielding story of love and obsession, Wuthering Heights, on Thursday September 4, at 7.30pm.

Set on the beautiful and mysterious wilderness of the Yorkshire moors, this treasured story of enduring love and passion has thrilled and entranced for generations.

The story charts the life of Heathcliff, a mysterious travelling boy who is adopted into the middle class Earnshaw family. Heathcliff is treated as one of the family and in time becomes a gentleman in ‘dress and aspect.’ However after his adopted father’s death, Heathcliff is cruelly reduced to the status of a servant. When the young woman he loves, Kathy, decides to marry another, he sets off to seek revenge on those he feels have ruined his life.

Award-winning script writer Laura Turner said it was an honour to have had the opportunity to adapt one of her all-time favourite romantic novels.

“It’s a bit like Marmite, people either love it or hate it, and I fell in love,” she explained.

“It’s a challenging story to adapt, spanning two generations, but I hope that I have managed to instil all the passion and wildness of Emily Brontë’s masterpiece and that people fall for Catherine and Heathcliff just as I have.”

Director Rebecca Gadsby added: “It’s gritty, captivating and all the drama happens on stage.

“Your heart will be in your mouth for two hours.”
