European Arts production of The Picture of Dorian Gray heads for Buxton Opera House

The production, which is set in the decadent world of Victorian London, tells the story of a handsome young man who becomes infatuated by a portrait which his friend has painted of him.

Dorian Gray makes a Faustian pact that he will remain forever young while the picture grows old.

The narcissistic and cold-hearted Dorian shows a callous disregard for friends who have helped him and a girl who falls under his spell.

European Arts’ stage version of Oscar Wilde’s famous story will be staged at Buxton Opera House on Sunday, May 24, at 7.30pm.

The company’s adaptation has won Stephen Fry’s admiration after the actor-writer attended a showing of their recent production of The Trials of Oscar Wilde. “Utterly compelling, brilliant ensemble acting - GO!” he commented.

The piece also has the family seal of approval with Oscar Wilde’s only grandson, Merlin Holland, having co-written the stage adaptation.

Merlin has studied and researched his grandfather’s life for the past 30 years. He is the editor of Irish Peacock and Scarlet Marquess, the first uncensored version of Wilde’s 1895 trials.

The Picture of Dorian Gray features a talented cast familiar from stage and screen, including Guy Warren-Thomas as Dorian Gray (Spooks The Greater Good, Downton Abbey) and Rupert Mason as Basil Hallward (Eastenders, A Touch of Frost).
