Christian Blackshaw's piano recital a highlight of Buxton festival

Christian Blackshaw is a wonderfully sensitive pianist and for me his concert was one of the highlights of this year's Buxton International Festival, writes Mavis Kirkham.

He played two pieces by Schubert: Six Moments Musicaux and the Piano Sonata no 14 in A Minor. In both he demonstrated emotional depth as well as technical skill.

The second half of the concert at the Pavilion Arts Centre was Schumann’s Fantasy in C Opus 17, which is sometimes played as if the pianist is showing off their technique. Christian’s approach was nuanced and delighted in the contrasts within the music. Every note seemed right and I was left feeling this was how Schumann would have wanted it.
