Bakewell: Choral Society and Silver Band to perform at Lady Manners School

What better way to spend a summer evening than listening to songs and music, drinking wine and eating strawberries?

Bakewell Choral Society will be joined by the Bakewell Silver Band for an enjoyable evening of light music at Lady Manners School, Bakewell, on Saturday, June 20.

The evening will include a selection of spirituals including favourites such as My Lord what a morning and Swing Low, Sweet Chariot. The choral society will also be singing

a range of “Encores” - popular songs of bygone days set to modern arrangements which are sure to get your toes tapping.

The choir will be conducted by its musical director Alan Eost and accompanied by pianist Amanda Kornas.

Bakewell Silver Band will play music from their extensive repertoire from the classics through to modern pieces like the James Bond theme, Skyfall.

Newly promoted to the First Section in the brass band world, its members rehearse in the Scout hut on Bath Street on Wednesday from 8pm to 10pm.

A mixed choir of more than 80 members, Bakewell Choral Society was founded by Richard Barnes in 1978. Its patron is the Duke of Devonshire.

Alan Eost joined the society as musical director and conductor in 2013 .

The choir performs four public concerts a year, including the popular Christmas Words & Music concert. Other concerts are a blend of sacred and secular choral music, covering a wide repertoire from classical to contemporary works including commissioned works for the society.

l Bakewell Choral Society is recruiting members in all sections of the choir, particularly tenors and basses. The society does not hold auditions.

Meetings are held on Monday evenings in term time at Bakewell Methodist Church, from 7.15pm to 9.30pm.
