Disastrous first half costs Buxton dear in men's hockey league

The Bucks struggled to find their rhythm at all on a pitch that resembled a beach. Keeping possession and passing the ball proved very difficult and Nuneaton, badly hurt by a 5-0 defeat the previous week, stormed into a 6-0 lead by the interval.

A tactical change was made for the second period, and a big effort, coupled with fine teamwork, brought about a much-improved display that Buxton can take plenty of positives from.

Inspired by man-of-the-match Sam Lomas, they actually ‘won’ the half 2-1 and were like a different team as they protected the middle of the park and proved hard to break down at the back.

Buxton were rewarded with a terrific goal from Joe Uprichard and although the hosts added to their tally, the last word went to James Whibberley-Cross, who slotted home after a a fine tackle and cross from Stuart Rowlands.

The result left Buxton next to bottom after five losses from six matches, and this Saturday they face a crunch match against the only side below them, South Nottingham.
