Buxton school rated as good with outstanding features say Ofsted

A primary school in Buxton has been praised for its ‘ambitious’ curriculum where learning is ‘exciting’.

Following a recent inspection by Ofsted Burbage Primary School has been rated as good for the quality of education, personal development, leadership and management, and the early years provision.

The education watchdog said the school was outstanding for behaviour and attitudes.

Martin Finch, lead inspector, said: “Pupils enjoy learning and coming to this school.

Overwhelmingly, parents and carers are highly supportive of the school’s friendly and caring ethos. One parent, typical of many, said, ‘Staff know the pupils as individuals and make learning exciting’.”

It was noted in the report the school has high expectations of its pupils. The curriculum has recently been redesigned so that pupils learn and remember more.

Mr Finch said: “Pupils are happy in school and feel safe.

“Their behaviour is excellent. They cooperate very well with each other.

“They focus on their learning and can be trusted to work independently.”

The report, which was published Monday October, 23 states the curriculum is ‘ambitious in most subjects’ although ‘occasionally, the work provided to help some pupils who are struggling to learn to read is too hard’.

Mr Finch said: “The school is keen pupils make more progress in their writing.

“Recent changes to the curriculum have provided pupils with more opportunities to compose writing.

“Pupils’ writing is improving as a result of this work.

“In mathematics, pupils have regular opportunities to reason and to problem-solve.”

When looking at the special educational needs and/or disability provision Mr Finch said pupils ‘are well cared for’ and the targets set for pupils with SEND are appropriate and mostly followed.

Headteacher, Anthony Tierney, recognised his staff team and said: “Our school is a wonderful place as a result of the incredible team of adults who show such strong values and commitment to our children and their families.

"An Ofsted report cannot fully capture the ethos and impact of the work of our school but I am very proud of the positive outcomes and response of our staff team and wider community.

"Thank you to everyone for their support and kindness.”
