ONE of the world’s best-loved musicals is about to open at The Art Theatre in New Mills — and looks set to have audiences crying out for more!
This must-see show, set in Victorian London, will be performed in the 500-seater auditorium by New Mills and District Amateur Operatic and Dramatic Society (NMAODS) from Tuesday November 22 to Saturday November 26.
Adapted and written by Lionel Bart, and based on the classic Charles Dickens story of orphan boy Oliver Twist, Oliver! will feature a list of fabulous songs including Food Glorious Food, Consider Yourself, You’ve Got to Pick-a-Pocket or Two, I’d Do Anything, Oom Pah Pah and As Long As He Needs Me, all delivered by a strong cast portraying the characters of Nancy, Fagin and Bill Sykes among others.
Society spokeswoman Angela Hulme said: “The entire company is very excited to be a part of this wonderful musical, especially the new younger cast members who play the workhouse/Fagin’s gang boys, and of course the two boys who have taken on the massive roles as the Artful Dodger and Oliver, both delivering skilful and emotional performances far beyond their years.”
It is 21 years since NMAODS last staged Oliver! and, as then, the stage crew has built the entire set on the theatre’s revolving stage. The theatre, which also has a licensed bar, is entirely run and supported by society volunteers, with profits from ticket sales going towards the upkeep of the building.
Oliver! will be performed at The Art Theatre, Jodrell Street, New Mills, from November 22 to November 26 at 7.15pm, with a Saturday matinee at 2.15pm.
Tickets, priced £10 for adults and £8 for concessions, are available on 01663 742951 or by visiting www.arttheatre.co.uk.
