Five professional actors are playing 13 characters in a stage adaptation of the classic children’s story Anne of Green Gables.

The show, which runs at Bakewell Town Hall from April 7 to 10, is directed by Derbyshire-based Simon Corble.

The coming of age novel tells the story of redheaded orphan, Anne Shirley, who is sent to Green Gables by mistake. Marilla and her brother Matthew Cuthbert had intended to adopt a boy to help on the farm, so when a spirited girl arrives they don’t know what to think. But soon the Cuthberts and the village community of Avonlea grow fond of Anne despite her constant chatter, mishaps and fiery temper.

Despite Anne of Green Gables’ book selling over 50 million copies worldwide, stage versions are rare in the UK.

Performances are at 7.30pm on April 7 and April 8 and at 2.30pm on April 9 and 10.
