Pop legend Rick Astley has announced a UK tour for 2016, with a date at Salford’s Lowry theatre in April.
The multi-million selling artist is releasing a new album in 2016 and is set to play at seven venues across the UK in March and April.
Rick’s career began in 1987 with his debut single Never Gonna Give You Up topping the charts within two weeks of its release. It then went on to reach number one in 16 other countries including most of Europe, Japan, the United States and Australia.
The following two years saw Rick continue to dominate the charts around the globe. In the UK, Rick was in the Top 40 every week for the first six months of his career. It was Britain’s largest selling single of that year.
The album “Whenever You Need Somebody” entered the UK album charts at Number 1 and sold over 15.2 million copies worldwide, making him the top selling British act of the year. It was a similar success story in the USA, as Rick became one of the few British artists to crack their market. Rick’s American success was reinforced with a second Number 1 single, “Together Forever”. “It Would Take a Strong Strong Man” became another Top 10 single and the album also reached a position within the Top 10, selling close to 2 million copies.
Shortly after this, Rick decided to leave the music business….only to surprise his British fans 13 years later, with an eight-date tour in 2004. He performed ‘classic’ songs from past decades, including Sinatra, Bacharach and The Carpenters, as well as a few from his own musical resume. More dates soon followed.
Since then, Rick has re-discovered his love for playing live, gradually increasing his international gigs and he continues to tour all over the world.
As well as a sell-out UK tour in 2012, Rick opened up for Peter Kay’s record breaking ‘The Tour That Does Tour –Tour’ and has performed at numerous large outdoor events and festivals every summer.
This will be Rick’s first major UK headline tour in four years and also marks the first time he has appeared in the following venues:
March 31 Gateshead Sage
April 1 Salford Lowry
April 4 Edinburgh Queens Hall
April 5 Warrington Parr Hall
April 6 Birmingham Symphony Hall
April 8 London Indigo2
April 9 Southend Cliffs Pavilion
