Lyrical and dramatic selections for Buxton festival concert

editorial image

A concert of very varied music was sung and played by renowned soprano Jennifer Davis and pianist Caroline Dowdle, writes Mavis Kirkham.

There were songs by Gounod, Poulenc, Debussy, Rachmaninov and Puccini; some well known and some less familiar, but all lyrical and

dramatic.

At points of high drama Jennifer’s powerful soprano made the space feel almost too small to contain her, and that is no criticism of her. When

she sang Britten’s The Last Rose of Summer, she sang with gentle tenderness. Her encore of Danny Boy brought tears to many eyes.

This was a lovely concert at Buxton’s Pavilion Arts Centre.
