CHAPEL-EN-LE-FRITH Carnival is a highlight for residents and visitors to the town and this year’s event on Saturday, June 18, will also mark a special anniversary.

2011 is the 40th continuous carnival held in Chapel and organisers have made plans to mark the occasion.

Jeanette Saxby, Chairperson, said: “This is an immense achievement given that many other communities are struggling.”

She said the continued success of the event was only possible with the help and support of the local community.

To celebrate this milestone the committee is inviting all those who have been Carnival Queen between 1971 and 2011 to this year’s event so they can be presented with a commemorative trophy designed and manufactured by students at Chapel-en-le-Frith High School.

If you have represented Chapel as a Carnival Queen in the past, ring Jeanette on 01298 813829 for more details on how you can be involved on the day and how to collect your commemorative trophy.

The 2011 Queen will be Charlotte Young, who is taking on the role for a second year. She will be crowned during a ceremony held in the Memorial Park following the Grand Procession.

A programme giving full details of all the events is on sale now at various outlets in the town and includes details on all the events and competitions being held.

The competition to design the front cover for this year’s programme was won by Abigail Lee, a pupil at Chapel-en-le-Frith Primary School.
