Buxton 1st XI’s seventh win of the season on Saturday at The Park moved them to within two points of 11th-placed Compstall in the Derbyshire and Cheshire Cricket League, as the Bucks look to avoid relegation with only three games remaining.
Buxton took first knock against Hazel Grove on a slow, low wicket, with Bob Marsden (32) and Luke Smith (15) putting on 51 runs for the first wicket before both falling in quick succession.
This left Julian Burgess (32), Tim Frohwein (18) and Nick Smith (28) to propel Buxton up to a challenging total of 152-8 at the tea interval.
After a brief shower, Hazel Grove looked well placed to pick up 19 points, having cruised to 114-1.
Buxton never gave in though, and a superb one-handed catch from Mark Hill removed the dangerous Nick Heywood (74) to turn the game on its head.
Buxton’s relentless fielding saw the final eight Grove wickets fall for just 25 runs with Nick Smith (6-41) spearheading the attack.
Matthew Poole (2-41) again bowled well up front and at the death, and the evergreen Bob Marsden summed up the home side’s fielding with a fine pick up and throw to claim a run-out.
Having been in such a commanding position, Hazel Grove slumped to 139 all out to give the Bucks some much-needed points. They travel to Old Glossop this coming Saturday.
