Valley beaten in top-of-the-table clash

University of Salford ‘NWL’

Division 4 East

Broughton Park 4th XV 25, Hope Valley 1st XV 15

HOPE Valley suffered only their second league defeat of the season at Broughton Park on Saturday.

The game started at a frantic pace, but handling errors saw Broughton break for a try, despite a valiant tackle from Williams.

Pressure at the back of the scrum saw Broughton break out wide to score another try, and poor tackling from the restart saw them make it 15-0. Valley hit back when a clever break by J McGuigan saw him chip over the defenders, with the home wing penalised for not releasing. From the resulting kick and line-out, Hodgson broke from the back of the scrum to get Hope’s first points with a try out wide.

More Valley pressure saw Hodgson break again to score a clever try, after throwing a dummy to the Broughton backs.

A chip over caused disarray in the Valley backs and a rare moment of pressure saw Park kick a penalty.

Then a run down the wing resulted in a clever long pass inside to Broughton’s supporting backs who scored under the posts.

For the second time in the match, a Broughton player was yellow-carded, before a tap penalty saw J McGuigan break through and power over the line to conclude the scoring. Man of the Match: J Bines.
