Ryan hails work ethic despite Bucks losing out

Buxton caretaker boss Tim Ryan says he can't fault the work ethic and commitment of his players despite defeats in his opening two games in charge.

A last-minute winner gave Stourbridge a 2-1 victory on Saturday before a young Chesterfield side were victorious in the Derbyshire Senior Cup semi-final on Tuesday night.

But whilst Ryan was disappointed with the results, he was keen to take the positives from both games.

He said: “It was hard on Tuesday as we just lacked the cutting edge going forward, not helped by having a few attacking players missing.

“The effort and commitment was certainly there from the players but if you lack that cutting edge then you’re not likely to win games.

“Against Stourbridge I thought we did really well. We had what looked a perfectly good goal chalked off for offside which could have changed the game completely, but always looked a threat going forward given the quality we have.

“The late goal was a hammer blow as I felt we deserved a point but again I couldn’t fault the players who had been desperate to play given all that had gone on in the previous weeks.”

Buxton now prepare to play Stourbridge again this weekend as they visit the Tarmac Silverlands Stadium for the return fixture, before Workington are the visitors next Tuesday night.

Ryan said: “Stourbridge will probably come here high in confidence after beating us but confidence is not something we lack at the moment.

“We’ll assess things on Thursday as to who is fit as we are carrying a few bumps and bruises,

“There’s a really good atmosphere amongst the squad at the moment as we are a really close-knit group.”

Ryan added that he has had little indication as yet as to his own future or who will take on the manager’s role permanently, applications for which were being accepted until Wednesday of this week.

He said: “I’ve spoken to the chairman who as always has been brilliant with me and until someone tells me otherwise I’ll keep preparing the team and trying to get us points on the board which will be a big boost.”
