South Lancashire and Cheshire League Division Three
Buxton 1st XV 41, University of Liverpool 5
WING wizard Alex Holliday celebrated a four-try spree as brilliant Buxton swept the league leaders aside at Sunnyfields.
Buxton’s superior physical presence proved evident from start to finish, and the hosts were soon into their stride when scrum half Patrick Campbell produced a perfect box kick on the students’ ten-metre line which allowed the speedy Holliday to race through and touch down.
Fast hands, coupled with some powerful running, enabled Holliday to get the better of his opposite number and slide over for his second try which centre Miles Bulger converted. Further excellent running and handling by the Buxton backs soon provided Holliday with his hat-trick.
Opposite wing Gary Ives then got into the act, supplying a fourth Buxton try by crashing over in the corner following further driving play by Buxton’s pack.
Some quick-thinking by the students’ fly half created an overlap for them to register a try and make the half-time scoreline 22-5.
Buxton’s front row of Mike Pullen, Colin Rabbitts and Joe Lomas remained dominant in the second half and provided a platform for their backs to feed off. That was coupled by some excellent covering and tackling, where second row forwards Ian Scott, Rick Bartram, centre Gavin Passey and loose head prop Pullen were particularly prominent.
The outstanding Holliday completed a personal milestone when carving his way through for a fourth try, which Bulger improved upon.
The introduction of Lee Knight on the opposite wing soon provided the students with further problems as Knight was to prove a constant threat. However, it was full-back Greg Mellor that provided Buxton’s sixth try of the game, Bulger again adding the extras, before tight head prop Lomas completed the scoring with a seventh try to inflict on the students their first defeat of the season.
