Leicester Storm A 14, Hope Valley Hawks 46
HOPE Valley Hawks will face the Sleaford Spartans in the final of the 3V Midlands League play-offs following victory over Leicester Storm. The rugby league side travel to Bromsgrove RFC on Sunday (2.30pm start) to take on the Spartans.
Against Leicester on Saturday, Valley started in a defensive fashion. In attack the Hawks made good ground through Hopkinson and Williams, and a kick through allowed Wells to gather and pass to Boam for the first try, converted by McGuigan. A great run up the middle from Evans was stopped short, but Shires sniped over from close range for a second converted try.
Then Shires made it 18-0, profiting from some poor tackling.
Further good Hawks possession from Maskrey, Wells and Warren was undone when a handling error out wide gifted Leicester a breakaway try, before a great backs move saw Evans take the inside pass and carve open Leicester to make it 24-4 at half time, following another McGuigan conversion.
From the restart, replacement Palfi made good ground down the middle, and skipper Shires took a quick tap to complete his hat-trick.
Hopkinson finished off a rampaging run, before the home side managed another breakaway try with a clever chip through.
Hawks weren’t finished though, and a great backs move saw man of the match Williams set up Wells in the passing move of the game, and then the influential Spencer made yet more ground to set-up Warren to make it 40-8.
Leicester scored from the restart, after the bounce of the ball fooled Valley’s defence, but sub Winder and Spencer made good ground, passing to McGuigan to jink through and score to make it 46-14 with the conversion.
