Buxton AC’s youngsters braved some horrible conditions to make their coach proud at the English Junior Fell Championships.

The event was held at Clougha Pike and Buxton sit fourth overall in a Championships that attracts junior athletes and clubs from all over the country.

Fourteen Buxton AC runners travelled to Quernmore, Lancashire to take part in the fell race, the penultimate in the series, also held as part of the Quernmore Sports Day and Village Country Show.

The routes were mainly run on rough farmland with tricky stream gullies, rough woodland sections and a steep downhill finish – made all the more challenging by the windy, rainy conditions.

First up for the hardy bunch from Buxton were the Under 9s team of Jimmy Golden, Hannah Cudahy and Lexi Thompson.

Cudahy finished 14th, Thompson 17th girls and Golden 26th boy.

It was an all girl team in the Under 11s with Lucy Whelan putting in a great finish sprint to come in 15th.

Rachel Cudahy took 17th and Molly Golden 25th.

Grace Longden ran a fantastic race in the Under 13s to finish fourth girl, with team-mate Rebecca Cudahy coming in 25th.

Will Longden had the stand out performance of the day coming in second overall, consolidating his position in the Championships in the silver medal position.

Also running well in the Under 15s were Lucy Bednall in fifth, Lauren Wilshaw ninth and Amy Whelan 11th.

Representing the club in the Under 17 race were Stuart Diamond and Heather Wilshaw who came in 10th boy and 15th girl overall.

Team manager Rachel Dowle was delighted with the performances of her young Buxton runners.

“How amazing are our youngsters?

“It was such an awful wet windy day and another super tough course but they took it all in their stride.”

Dowle also paid tribute to the families of the club’s juniors.

“I’d like to thank all our amazing parents who rally round to get our juniors to these events – without your support our youngsters would not have the opportunity to have these awesome experiences and be able to take part in events of this calibre.

“They’re challenging themselves against the best in the country and making us proud.”
