Commemorative events to mark 150th anniversary of the railways

Commemorative events are to be held to mark the arrival of the ‘Midland Railway’ and ‘London and North Western’ railway lines in Buxton 150 years ago.

An exhibition of local railway photographs will be held in Buxton Methodist Church, on the Market Place, Buxton, on June 3, 5, 6, 7 and 8, between 11am and 4pm.

There will be displays in shops and shop windows around Buxton, plus a display from the archives at Buxton Museum.

Finally, an illustrated talk on the two railways will be held on Thursday June 6 in Buxton Methodist Church Hall at 7.30pm.

The Friends of Whaley Bridge Station is also hosting an event to commemorate the railway’s anniversary on Saturday, June 15.

From 10am until 4pm there will be a display of historic photographs as well as memorabilia.

There will also be a colouring corner for children to enjoy and a quiz, in which adults will have the opportunity to win a Northern Rail Family Ticket.

Members of the Friends of Whaley Bridge Station will be dressed in Victorian costume and everyone is invited to attend.
