Trial riders battle tough conditions

STAFFORDSHIRE Moorlands Motorcycle Club held its annual Scott Ellis Trophy Trial over a challenging, 15-section, three-lap course at Tittesworth Farm, Leek, on Sunday.

Conditions were very slippery with lashings of mud, rocks and steep gradients.

The winner of the main trophy, Craig Robinson, lost 25 marks which demonstrates the severity of the going. Sections three and eight were eased after the first lap, but the hill climb at section eight defeated all but the best, with only Robinson keeping his score in single figures.

Second place went to Dan Farrer having his second ride after suffering a serious foot injury. On today’s performance it will not be long before he is back to winning form.

The majority of the entry rode the clubmans route, which was a lot more straightforward and usually the adult and veteran riders put up the best performance.

Youth rider Sam Yeomans beat allcomers by a considerable margin to gain top spot. Yeomans’ loss of just seven marks saw him finish ahead of Steve Clift, Carl Baker and Tom Stewart. To mark his achievement, the club agreed to award him a special prize.

The Auto Torque Trophy for the best clubman was awarded to Tom Stewart, who had an easy victory over his more experienced rivals Chris Gilbert and Neil Butterworth. Steve Clift won the Roly Capper Shield for best veteran after a close tussle with Carl Baker and Steve Davies.
