Class told when Buxton men’s 1st team, next to bottom in the table, collided head-on with Boots, unbeaten leaders, in the Premier Division of the East Midlands League.
But despite the 6-1 defeat, Buxton produced a spirited performance and the scoreline flattered the away side, who have won nine of their ten league games this season.
In contrast, Buxton have now lost eight of their ten league contests. But they started the game strongly and frustrated their Nottingham visitors for long periods with some resolute defending from Will Mather, Dan Bedworth, Sam Lomas and the returning Ben Meaton, who was deservedly handed the man-of-the-match accolade.
In fact, the best scoring chance of the early skirmishes fell to Buxton as a quick counter-attack from Jamie Wilton found Joe Uprichard, who shot narrowly wide.
Sadly, minutes later, Boots grabbed the lead when a slick pass found striker Adam Innocent, who slotted past Dan Robins in the home net.
Buxton continued to battle away in the second half, only for the visitors to add further goals at regular intervals. Innocent scored again and there were strikes from Adam Henfrey (2), Danny Freeman and Stephen Poole.
Nevertheless Paul Hancock added real quality to the home side’s midfield and was unlucky not to find the net after a skilful run.
Buxton did finally get on the scoresheet when Bedworth rounded four players before finding James Talbot, who delivered a delightful pass for Uprichard to slot home.
All in all, the Derbyshire outfit took a lot of positives from their performance, which should stand them in good stead for this Saturday’s crunch match away to fellow strugglers, Nuneaton, who sit just one place and one point above them in the table.
