Sheen polishes national silverware

SHEEN tug of war experienced their best national championships since the 1970s as they went on to be crowned national indoor tug of war champions in all six weight categories in the mens team championships.

Sheen had previously won six weight classes at the 1978 National Indoor Championships, and went on to repeat that feat 34 years later. Not only did Sheen make it a clean sweep, they also racked up their 100th National Indoor Tug of War Championship title, and became undisputedly the best indoor tug of war team that has been seen in England.

Sheen won the 600 kilos, 640 kilos, 720 kilos and catchweight competitions in relatively convincing fashion, but were pushed much closer in the 560 kilos and 680 kilos competitions, winning the final of the 560 kilos competition by two ends to one after defeating Kilroe from Manchester, and they had to endure a tough final in the 680 kilos competition against Uppertown from Chesterfield, taking the gold medal by two ends to 0.

The Sheen Ladies tug of war team picked up where the mens team left off, winning the two ladies weight classes at 540 kilos and 560 kilos, defeating rivals Bedford in the final of both weight classes.

The mixed 4+4 competition took place at the end of the championships, with teams of four men and four ladies competing against each other. Sheen Men and Sheen Ladies joined forces to form two teams for this competition. Both teams eventually progressed to the final, with Sheen Ladies defeating Bedford in their semi final, and Sheen defeating Kilroe. The Sheen Ladies team won the gold medal, with Sheen taking silver and Kilroe the bronze.

Both Sheen and Sheen Ladies will now go forward to represent England against Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland at the UK indoor Championships in Belfast in February.
