Running: Buxton’s Watson is victorious but Vernon steals the plaudits

The latest Pavilion Gardens 5K race saw the ladies’ course record smashed by international athlete Elle Vernon.

Vernon (Stockport Harriers) finished the course in 17 minutes and 37 seconds, just 20 seconds behind the overall race winner, Buxton AC’s Steve Watson.

There was a third-placed finish for Buxton University’s Rob Wood in 18.54.

The second lady home was another local, with Buxton’s Annemarie Claye finishing the course in 21.26, enough to ensure a 15th place finish overall.

Another AC runner, Junior Elliot Meylan was fifth overall in 20.05, with Amelia Newbould finishing as the first junior female home in 22.42.

Some 66 runners took part in this popular event, ranging in ages from seven to 70 and special mention goes to young Luke Guise, 7, who stormed around the course to finish in a highly-respectable 22.46 which ensured him 23rd position overall.

On the fells, at the final race in the club’s fell series, the 7.1 mile ‘Leg It Round Lathkill’ event, 10 senior members of the Club took part, led home by in-form Rob White in eighth position thanks to a time of 48 minutes, 40 seconds.

Other club members that competed: Pete Bailey, Richard Bouglas, Ross Martland, Alfie Bayley, Helen Brunt, Chris Bent, Angela Bent, Bill Alsop (winner of the over-70 prize) and Krissie Ivings.

The Ivings family were well represented in the Junior Fun Run, with twins Isabel & Katie finishing first and second respectively in the u-10 Girls, while brother Edward was second in the u-13 boys’ race.
