Buxton Amateur Boxing Club kicked off their new season on Saturday with Jon Pickering making his debut in the first regional round of the Clubs for Young People Championships.
Pickering was given a difficult draw at light-welterweight against a skilful and experienced England representative from Nottingham’s Phoenix Gym, Connor Seery.
The Buxton boxer commenced using his height and reach advantage, keeping his opponent on the end of his range with a sharp and accurate jab. The third round saw Seery show more aggression, and Pickering was forced to concentrate and work throughout using his growing experience to hold and keep distance where necessary, and his reward was a win on a majority points decision.
Also weighing in for Buxton on the Saturday was Adam Sircar, who gained a bye at lightweight in the Derbyshire rounds of the under-20 bout novices, and Jordan Bennett, whose opponent failed to show.
