LITTLE Hayfield rider Christian Iddon is to help spearhead Oxford TAG Triumph’s bid for the British Supersport Championship in 2012.
Iddon, 27, is to remain with the team for another term after a successful debut season in Oxford TAG Triumph colours last year.
Consistently improving each time he climbed aboard the bike, last year the multiple British Supermoto Champion enjoyed a strong finish to the 2011 season placing in the top four in each of the last nine races of the series to rapidly ascend the championship table and take equal fifth overall in the final classification.
“I’m really happy to be with Oxford TAG Triumph again as last year was quality,” enthused Iddon.
“They are a really good team who didn’t put any pressure on me last year.
“We built a solid platform and a great bike last season and it’s good for me to be back on the same bike again for a second year running.
“I know they have been working hard over winter to improve the bike and they have put together a strong team line-up who I’m sure will all work well together, so fingers crossed we will have a good package and a great chance of winning the title.
“I’m not going to say what I’m expecting of myself for the year but rest assured I’ll be giving it 100 per cent as I do every time I go out on a bike.”
In their best season to date, Oxford TAG Triumph’s riders finished third, fourth and equal fifth in last year’s British Supersport Championship and with another year’s experience and development of the Triumph Daytona 675R behind them the Leicestershire-based squad will be looking for further progress this season.
Iddon, alongside Richard Cooper and Paul Young, will lead the team’s title challenge in 2012, while up and coming teenage brothers Shaun and Gary Winfield provide the youth element of the squad.
Acknowledged as the rider who brought the 675cc Triumph Daytona to the track, vastly experienced Australian Young will be embarking on his seventh successive year in the Supersport class with the marque and his fourth with the Oxford TAG Triumph Team.
Cooper, meanwhile, will be entering the British Supersport arena for the first time after an outstanding 2011 season that culminated with him capturing the National Superstock 1000 Championship.
Assessing the squad’s prospects for the season, team owner Rob Winfield said: “I think this is going to be a good year for Oxford TAG Triumph.
“We have three top riders who all have a chance of winning the title.
“Steve Randle has been working on the engines since the final round at Brands Hatch last year and they are looking strong.
“We now just need to get the riders on the bikes and start testing so we are ready to go when the season starts.”
