Hard-fought away point for Buxton Hockey Club

ENER-G Hockey League 1st XI: East Midlands 2

Kettering 2, Buxton 2

BUXTON came from behind twice to earn a share of the spoils in this extremely entertaining encounter.

The hosts started the brighter, but the Bucks defence of M Lomas, T Griffin, C Evans and W Mather held firm.

The opening goal came from an aimless hit into the box which evaded all the Buxton players and found its way to J Davy, who scored past the despairing reach of S Thyer.

Buxton’s response was immediate. Curzon’s skill on the wing earned a short corner, which was fired in by D Lowton. But a suicidal pass across his own box by Lomas meant Kettering went into the break ahead as it was intercepted and cooly finished by the prodigious M Chiu.

The game after half-time was end to end stuff, with missed chances falling to Browett.

Buxton eventually equalised. Good work from the attacking triumvirate of Orritt, Saunders and Wilton culminated in another short corner finished off this time by Wilton.

Kettering almost won it at the death, M Gee strode through Buxton’s defence but was tackled in the nick of time by Lowton.

Buxton: S Thyer (GK), D Beddington, W Mather, M Lomas, T Griffin, L Saunders, J E Wilton, D Lowton, M Curzon, W Orritt, P Browett. Man of the match: T Griffin.
