ENER-G Hockey League
2nd XI: East Midlands 2
Buxton 2nd XI 0, Mansfield 2nd XI 4
Buxton Seconds played well against Mansfield last Saturday, only conceding one goal in a very close second half, despite being a definite second best up until half time.
The Bucks got off to a bad start in the first minute when the normally reliable goalkeeper Thyer misjudged a soft, bouncing shot at goal, the ball spinning off his pads into the net.
Soon after, the visitors scored from a close range push following several short passes at a corner, and then added a third just before the interval from a cracking, hard hit from the edge of the circle.
The home side had plenty of attacks, with Saunders dominant on the wing, though scoring opportunities were rare. Matthew Lomas and Bedworth, normally a first-teamer, were strong in defence and Pathe was influential in midfield.
Buxton raised their game in the second half, with striker Sewell worrying the Mansfield backs, and should have scored from two easy chances, one just missed by Longden near the penalty spot from a Sewell pass and another from a short corner when the ball was only three metres from the goal line with the GK out of position.
Buxton: S Thyer, D Robins, M Lomas, J Clayton, D Bedworth, L Saunders, D Pathe, P Danson, J Lomas, P Heathcote, S Longden, J Sewell, A Drennan, Alan Talbot.
