New Mills Primary School pupil Maisie Done (6) made a golden start to her competitive gymnastics career last weekend.
She has been doing gymnastics since she was 3½ years old at New Mills Leisure Centre with New Mills Gymnastics Club, but on Sunday made her competitive debut at Stockport Gymnastics Centre in the Frank Williams Championship.
There were three other members of the New Mills Gymnastics Club that also competed in the age six category on the day; Imogen Cooper, Annabel Bagshaw and Lowri Mashburn.
They were up against gymnasts from Wilmslow, Newall Green, Stockport, Ribble Valley, Red Shoes and CC Gymnastics.
Maisie practised very hard leading up to the Championships and was very excited to be taking part in a competition at last.
So she was delighted when she received a bronze medal in the vault and also joint silver medal with her team mate Lowri in the floor routine.
But when the overall placings were called she was amazed to win the gold medal and a trophy for the overall winner with the highest combined points in both events.
Dad Stephen said: “We were all very surprised.
“All four girls had been doing well in practice for it - they go to the leisure centre every Saturday afternoon.
“But no one expected Maisie to win any medals. She just did really well on the day and we are very proud of her.
“She is still on a high from it now. She took all her medals and trophy into school on Monday. She is really excited by it.”
It ended up being a double triumph for New Mills Gymnastics Club as Lowri also received the overall silver medal.
