ENER-G Hockey League: Buxton 1st XI 5, Kettering 1st XI 0
BUXTON put in a five-star performance as they blew away Kettering in a one-sided encounter.
The home side dominated the opening exchanges, wingers D Pathe and L Saunders terrorising their respective full-backs and whipping good crosses into the “D”.
The first goal came after a short corner was conceded by the away defence.
The ball found its way to Wilton who bundled it in at the far post.
Wilton was having a storming game in central midfield, ably supported by the experienced D Lowton, and the two combined for the second goal, the former being granted too much space in the final third, finding the latter with a fine pass, Lowton stroking the ball beyond the keeper.
Five minutes into the second half and it was all over as two goals in two minutes killed off Kettering’s hopes of getting something out of the game.
Curzon poached the first from two yards after Lowton’s shot had been parried, then Curzon and Wilton linked up to set-up P Browett, who rounded the keeper to score.
Kettering’s chances were few and far between as Mather and Lomas were too strong in defence. P Jones, D Bedworth and J Stewart all kept their concentration, making sure that keeper Balderstone could register a clean sheet.
Orritt missed three chances in the second half that would have put the result beyond doubt, while Balderstone tipped a rare Kettering effort onto the post.
Browett wrapped things up with his second of the match, lofting over the keeper following good work from Saunders.
