Buxton Athletic Club’s junior fell team have been crowned Derbyshire Junior Team of the Year.
They received their accolade at the Derby Telegraph Sports Award 2017 at The Roundhouse, Derby College, from former professional footballers Michael Johnson and Roger Davis.
Finalists for the second year running, this time the youngsters went one better.
The junior fell running team had the most successful year in the club’s history.
They won a team silver medal at the English Junior Fell Championships and a team bronze in the British Uphill Championships, as well as individual golds and silvers in both.
Four members of the team also earned a call-up to represent England.
Representing the juniors at the awards were Jonah Purvis, Luke Mamczur and Heather Wilshaw.
Team manager Rachel Dowle said the team consisted of over 30 youngsters.
“In an age were childhood obesity and a sedentary lifestyle are real problems for society, these kids show the benefits that a healthy, outdoor lifestyle can have to those that get up and have a go,” she said. “I would like to thank fellow junior coaches Wendy Higginbottom, Mark Quince and Terry Fowler.”
